Update -- One Year Later
Hey all,

I am actually updating the news! Its been over a year since an update has been made, so I thought it should be done. You are all still downloading music, thats fantastic.

SHNTUNES has moved back to my home as MailStart/WebBox has closed down their Sacramento Offices, so things have been throttled back as I need to be able to use my cable modem too!

New Seed & Successful Move

Well I have successfully moved the server back to my home. I am thinking of moving my email services over here to, if I did is there anyone who wants an email address? Use the contact link to tell me if you are interested in an email address.

In other news, I received the Trey 07-12-01 seed (went to the show too). It's early, yes, but not too bad! No DAE on it which is always a plus.

Problems with @Home are Causing Disconnects
As some of you may know California is having a power crisis. Unfortunately my provider @Home is in the block of circuits that gets hit by the rolling blackouts. This means shntunes.org will be intermittently available while this power issue continues. If you get cut off just try connecting again. I am told by @Home they are 'making changes to deal with the situation', but who really knows.

I don't have a big update, but I found the rest of the Louis Armstrong, so for those of you with that partial set, the rest is now on the server.

That mailbox is hosted by my company and we have been having some trouble with the mail server the last couple of days. Happy Holidays everyone. I am leaving for vacation today and will return January 2. I am keeping the server running during this time. If it disapears it will return sometime after January 2. I also made an update, not big, but some good MMW. Hope you all enjoy your Holiday. Happy Solstice everyone! Shtunes.org is back up and running strong! I have the drive problem fixed and shn2 is just about filled up. When I return from vacation I will mount shn3 (60gb) and start filling it. To celebrate the Solstice I am offering up 50 logins through the 22nd.

shntunes.org back up and repopulating
Well I fixed it! Turns out I had some bad UDMA drivers that caused the drives partitions to get hosed when the partition exceeded 30GB of written data. Real lame, but now the issue is resolved. I will be repopulating content over the next couple of days and if all goes well by Friday everything should be back to normal. If there is anything from the content list you would like to have added sooner let me know, otherwise I will repopulate the site in the order the CD's are archived in my folder.

With the service down for so long, I have zeroed out the public logins, there are now 45 new logins available for 3 connections capped at 25Kbps.

Well thats it, 3rd crash!
I don't know what to say, while copying files from my ME box to the NT box I suffered a crash. Just as the 40GB drive was filling up. I am so done with this its crazy. The site is up today but I do not know if I will keep it up. No matter how hard I try to keep this up it just keeps failing. The crazy thing is at work I run NT boxes hooked up to Terabytes of storage and I have never ever seen this problem. I was hoping it was a virus, but all scans are clean. It could be the DMA drivers I am using and so I may try reinstalling NT with generic drivers, but I dont know. Perhaps its time to move to 2000.

While working with someone on a trade I discovered that certain paths were mapped all wrong. I have fixed those paths and a lot more shows are now open (see Phish97 on shn2 for starters). Sorry for the confusion.

New Drives Installed
Today I bought a new Western Digital 40GB drive and a 1 year old Seagate 28GB drive to replace the single 60GB drive that may be part of my problem. I have also been doing a lot of research on this and have learned that this may also be caused by the way WarFTP writes data. In order to remove all possabilities (save the OS) I will likely be changing over a different FTP server. This may happen this weekend, and for the most part everyones accounts will remain active, if you loose your account please contact me.

Another SHNTUNES Tradgedy
Well it happened again, as soon as that Maxtor 60GB drive hit the 45GB point, blamo the partition got hosed. Looks like I lost everything in the update, I was just getting ready to archive it too!! This is so sad, I am very discouraged and may stop this all together. I hope to get the drive replaced with 2 30GB drives tomorrow.

Catastrophe Strikes SHNTUNES.ORG
I am terribly sad to report that the drive holding SHN Vol 2 has become corrupt! As a result I have lost over 32 gigs of SHN’s. I had about 20% of that volume archived to CD, but the rest is hosed! I am sorry to anyone who got hit by this but this was a new drive and I have never seen a drive fail so soon. I am currently running diagnostics on the drive and will do my best to get that lost content back as soon as possible.

Cable Modem Issues
Hey folks, I have noticed a large degree of dropped packets originating on my upstream link. It looks like comcast is having some routing/capacity issues so your transfers will go slower. Hopefully they will get this resolved soon, according to my investigations the problem is located inside the comcast network. All external handoff points have excellent ping times, its the internal pings of @home that are creating the lag.

Bandwidth and More Logins
Well this bandwidth thing is starting to get clear to me. I have been gathering some good throughput data the last few days and I will make the graphs from that data public sometime this weekend. With the graphs will come a new voting question that is more in line with the bandwidth I have. What I do know is I have seen users get up to 55KBps during off peak times but throughputs will be lowest between 7:00pm - 12:00am PST since I am using a cable modem and most of my neighbors are online during that time. Anyway more to follow, 30 more logins have been released so have fun and good luck.

Due to a software bug logins were prematurely cut off yesterday. I have fixed the bug and added anther 30 for today. Bandwidth seems to be best, as expected, late at night. Ah well, such is the drawback of broadband.

So far the server seems to be stable. Not bad for freeware but I am going to keep monitoring. I added a new nic to the server today which has reduced a lot of my local network collisions. Cable modem bandwidth is still a trip if anyone is getting lower then expected throughput please send me an email letting me know what your usual throughput is.

shntunes FTP server update
Well the server is running okay. There have been a few bumps during today and to anyone who was cut off I am sorry. I am a but puzzled by some of the throughputs I have seen. My testing showed rock solid 30KBps throughput with 4 concurent connections. So far the throughputs I have seen are all over the map. Some of you are getting the 30KBps max while others are getting less then 10KBps. I want to be sure I am not holding anyone back, so if you normally get better throughput elseware please let me know so I can throttle accordingly. I will keep monitoring the situation but your help in this would be appreciated, click the Contact link to get ahold of me.

shntunes.org FTP server launched
Consider this a public beta of the site. The FTP site is done and has been stress tested over the last 3 days. Although the web site is not fully functional, enough is done to distribute shn files. I am testing bandwidth on this cable modem so please report any irregularities to chris@shntunes.org. I will also be limiting the number of logins to 20 for the remaining portion of today (11/10/200). Depending on how things go there may be more logins offered tomorrow. Currently the server is set to allow 4 users at 30KBps. I have tested this from my T1 at work and was able to sustain 30KBps on 4 connections so I am confident things will be okay.
